National Head Start Association (NHSA)


The National Head Start Association (NHSA) is a mission driven, nonprofit organization committed to the belief that every child, regardless of circumstances at birth, has the ability to succeed in life.  Our mission is to coalesce, inspire, and support the Head Start field as a leader in early childhood development and education.



The Data and Research Associate is an integral member of the Center for Policy, Data, and Research (CPDR) and reports to the Director of Policy, Data, and Research.  The Data and Research Associate is responsible for advancing CPDR’s mission to generate new knowledge to lead reform for stronger child and family outcomes, informed by outstanding practices from the Head Start community. As part of the CPDR team, the Associate will add to the organization’s knowledge and analytical capacity about data and data use in Head Start. The Associate will also further the ability of Head Start programs to gather and use data independently and in relationships with peer networks and research partners.


Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help advance the conversation about data use for continuous quality improvement with Head Start stakeholders in local, state, and regional roles.
  • Contribute to CPDR analyses and advocacy activities about federal Head Start policies, regulations, and systems.
  • Conduct and analyze surveys of Head Start practitioners relevant to current policy topics.
  • Develop and grow a Researcher Registry of researchers interested in collaborating with Head Start programs.
  • Create and support relationship building opportunities between Head Start practitioners and researchers.
  • Support CPDR’s on-going work to measure, aggregate, and analyze key indicators among a group of Head Start programs.
  • Periodically update summaries, fact sheets, and website content about Head Start research, access, and best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



§  Passion for NHSA’s mission

§  Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree

§  2 years of relevant experience required,

§  Experience working with large data sets and analytic tools is desirable

§  Capacity to design and execute multiple and constantly changing projects, with both creativity and high-quality work, on tight deadlines

§  Innovative and analytical approach to problem solving

§  Ability to adapt quickly and confidently to new challenges and job requirements with entrepreneurial thinking, even while under pressure

§  Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong influencing skills

§  Competency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) and experience with databases is a plus

§  Competency in Drupal or other website tools and social media is desirable
