STEM Afterschool Program

Status

Full-time, 12-month term of service

Position Description

The Maryland-DC Campus AmeriCorps VISTA serving at Georgetown University will be engaged in the STEM Afterschool Program.

Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service (CSJ) is seeking a MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA to coordinate a STEM engagement program at DC Public Schools (DCPS). This program is in response to multiple requests from current DCPS partners, school principals that have interest in becoming partners.

CSJ works in multiple DCPS elementary schools in Wards 1 and 7, all of which have a majority of students whose families are low-income and qualify for free and reduced lunch.  The STEM engagement program will provide STEM tutoring, project-based engagement, field trips, college and career programming, and connections with GU STEM faculty and programs to address the needs of these underserved students. GU students will provide the one-to-one tutoring and group projects. The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will provide significant program coordination and research capacity to the STEM engagement programs that will lead to sustained, long-term educational interventions in STEM in these partner schools. CSJ’s MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will research STEM tutoring curricula and practices, STEM concepts infusion within other tutoring activities, coordinate the necessary training of GU students to perform effectively with the new materials, and develop regular, holistic activities in STEM engagement.

Member Duties

The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will build significant capacity for Georgetown University’s community engagement activities by responding to an important need for STEM interventions as identified by current and future school partners. The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will focus on program sustainability, institutionalizing the work within CSJ’s capacity, and the creation of a replicable model for future school partnerships.

The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will also contribute to strengthening the program curricula to provide advanced activities to supplement the STEM tutoring. Examples of activities coordinated by the MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA include:
