Health Scientist Administrators, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is seeking candidates with extensive research and programmatic expertise in 1) behavioral and social science, 2) clinical and health services research, or 3) community health and population science to coordinate extramural research activities for the positions of Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) within the Division of Scientific Programs.
 
Health Scientist Administrator – Integrative Biological and Behavioral Sciences
 
The incumbent will manage research on biobehavioral mechanisms and pathways underpinning resilience and susceptibility to adverse health conditions that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority populations, persons of less privileged socioeconomic status, and other health disparity populations.

As a Health Scientist Administrator at NIMHD you will:
Serve as a Program Official with scientific oversight of a portfolio of extramural grants, cooperative agreements and training awards related to the behavioral sciences, including but not limited to research on neurodevelopmental processes that influence cognition and behavior; mechanisms through which behavioral risk and protective factors influence the development of adverse health conditions; individual-level strategies and interpersonal relationships for coping with adversity and chronic stress; the impact of racism and discrimination on health behavior and strategies to ameliorate their effects; mechanisms underlying health literacy and health numeracy and their influenceon health-seeking or health-harming behaviors;
Provide programmatic leadership and serve as the scientific point of contact for research programs in the behavioral sciences at the NIMHD;
Formulate, develop, and implement the scientific activities of behavioral research programs across the NIH focused on minority health and health disparities;
Work across the NIH and other government and non-government agencies to promote and coordinate scientific research and discovery in areas related to this program.
Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D., or equivalent degree in the biomedical sciences, with substantial research experience in behavioral science.

 
Health Scientist Administrator– Community Health and Population Science
 
The health scientist administrator will manage research on the etiology, prevention, screening, early detection and intervention management of a broad range of disease and conditions that have been shown to have significant burden in health disparity populations using large studies that reflect overall population health.
 
As a Health Scientist Administrator at NIMHD, you will:
Serve as an expert in epidemiology, provide technical assistance on the use of complex statistical and epidemiologic techniques;
Manage scientific portfolio of extramural grants, related to epidemiologic studies that identify and describe disease burden and risk factors in disparity populations;
Provide programmatic leadership for epidemiological, behavioral, social applied and surveillance research to understand the impact of social and physical determinants on community health and population well being;
Evaluate data collection, quality control and data utilization methods used to study epidemiological problems and issues;
Work across the NIH and other government and non-government agencies to promote and coordinate scientific research and discovery in areas related to this program.

Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D., or equivalent degree in the biomedical sciences, with experience in epidemiologic research.

Health Scientist Administrator – Clinical and Health Services Research
 
NIMHD is looking for an individual with research and programmatic expertise in health services research to provide scientific leadership and coordinate extramural research activities in this area within NIMHD.
 
As a Health Scientist Administrator at NIMHD you will:
Serve as a Program Officer with scientific oversight of a portfolio of extramural grants related to access to health care, coordination of care, and how patient-clinician communication affects the quality of health care in minority and other disparity populations;
Provide programmatic leadership for clinical research programs in preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions that can directly or demonstrably contribute to reducing or eliminating health disparities;
Formulate, develop, and implement the scientific activities of clinical research in health care settings to generate new knowledge to improve quality health outcomes, reduce healthcare delivery costs, reduce medical errors and improve patient safety of minority and other disparity population;
Work across the NIH and other government and non-government agencies to promote and coordinate scientific research and discovery in areas related to this program.

Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D., or equivalent degree in the biomedical sciences, with experience in health services research.
