Position Announcement: Tenure-track Associate/Full Professor of Early Childhood Special Education (Birth through Kindergarten)

The Department of Specialized Education Services (SES) seeks to fill an academic, tenure-track position at the Associate or Full Professor rank with a specialization in early intervention and/or early childhood special education (Birth through Kindergarten).

The position involves: (a) maintaining an active research agenda; (b) seeking and securing external funding for students and research; (c) mentoring doctoral students; (d) collaborating with faculty in other departments and units for program development, research, and service activities; (e) teaching synchronous and asynchronous online courses in interdisciplinary early childhood programs at the undergraduate and graduate level (e.g., B-K Education licensure program; Early Care and Education M.Ed., certificate programs); (f) team teaching some courses with other faculty from the SES Department and the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS); (g) advising and mentoring students; (h) carrying out some program administrative duties; and (i) providing professional service at all levels.

  • ●  An earned doctorate in Early Childhood Special Education, Special Education with a focus in Early Childhood, or a related field

  • ●  IHE experience in teaching, publishing research, completing scholarly activity and professional service

  • ●  Experience working in early intervention and/or early childhood programs

  • ●  Evidence of success or potential for success securing and managing external funding (e.g., federal- and state-funded grants and contracts, foundation grants)

  • ●  Experience teaching diverse students in early intervention, early childhood special education, and/or early childhood credentialing and licensure programs

  • ●  Experience with program development for pre-service and in-service personnel development, including experience with synchronous and asynchronous distance learning formats

    The SES Department offers programs in Birth through Kindergarten (BK), Special Education, and Professions in Deafness. It includes 17 full-time faculty who have a history of success procuring external funding for both research and development of service providers, teachers, researchers and leaders. The Department offers NCATE accredited teacher preparation programs in Special Education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as a Ph.D. program in Special Education, with over 20 doctoral scholars with foci in several areas, including Early Childhood Special Education.

    Faculty in the SES Department collaborate with faculty in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) to co-administer and implement interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in blended early childhood general and special education, including undergraduate BK licensure and non-licensure online and on campus programs, graduate initial BK licensure, and an M.Ed. program in Birth-Kindergarten Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development (BK:ISED) with advanced licensure and non-licensure options. Online certificate and M.Ed. programs in BK equip graduate students for advanced level applied careers and leadership roles. The BK:ISED M.Ed. program is ranked the #2 online M.Ed. in early childhood in the country by The Best Schools. The BK programs enroll more than 350 students at the undergraduate level and approximately 70 students at the graduate level. The University houses an NAEYC accredited inclusive child care center that serves as a laboratory for early childhood teacher training and research.

In addition, the Department offers Bachelor's degree programs in ASL Interpreter Preparation; Dual Licensure in Deaf and Special Education; Deaf Advocacy; Special Education: General Curriculum; and Dual Licensure in Special and Elementary Education. The Department also offers Graduate level initial licensure and M.Ed. programs in Special Education: General Curriculum.

Besides SES, the School of Education consists of five additional departments: Educational Research Methodology; Counseling and Educational Development; Library and Information Studies; Teacher Education and Higher Education; and Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations. This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position beginning August 1, 2017. Salary for this position is negotiable and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
